California Great ShakeOut – Adding SMS to Your Emergency Communication Plan

Living in California, everyone here at TextMarks is all too aware of the potential for the Big One.  On October 16 at 10:16am, schools, businesses, organizations, The Great Shakeout - Oct 16nonprofits and government agencies across California will practice “Drop, Cover and Hold On” and other aspects of their emergency plans as part of the California Great ShakeOut. Many great resources on what to do during an earthquake can be found on the Great ShakeOut Resource Page.

Practice doesn’t end once the shaking stops, however.   For instance, with schools, communication to parents after an earthquake is an essential part of your school safety plan. Is texting included in your drill? SMS is an important component of an effective, carefully thought out, emergency communication plan. The SafeAmerica Foundation’s Text First, Talk Second campaign promotes texting first, before making phone calls, so consider adding a texting drill to your plans during the Great ShakeOut.
